New Year, New Boundaries: Why Your Health Affects Your Skin Treatments
As we step into a new year, there’s a lot of talk about doing more new routines, new goals, new commitments. But this year, I want to talk about something different: doing better by your body.
At the end of the year, between travel, work, and the general hustle, I could feel my body starting to decline. I wasn’t outwardly sick yet; just tired, run down, and pushing through like so many of us do. Despite that, I decided to perform a deep microchanneling treatment on myself.
The very next day, I became significantly ill.
What followed was an eye opening reminder: my recovery from the illness was delayed and my skin’s healing from the microchanneling was noticeably slower and less optimal than usual. It was a real time reminder that our skin does not operate independently from the rest of our body.
The Biology Behind It
Aesthetic treatments, especially those that create controlled micro-injuries like microchanneling, rely heavily on your immune system to heal properly. When your body is fighting off a virus or infection, immune resources are diverted toward survival, not skin regeneration.
This means:
-
Slower cell turnover
-
Delayed inflammation resolution
-
Reduced collagen signaling
-
Longer healing timelines
-
Less predictable results
Even if a treatment is “routine,” your body still needs to be in a healthy, supported state to respond optimally.
A Message for Estheticians
As professionals, we often pride ourselves on pushing through, but this is your reminder that selfcare is professional care.
-
If you feel run down, postpone invasive treatments on yourself
-
During intake, ask better questions
-
Be a detective: recent travel, fatigue, sore throat, body aches all matter
-
Remember: postponing a treatment protects both results and client health
The New Year is the perfect time to normalize rescheduling when health isn’t optimal.

A Message for Clients
Please tell your provider how you’re feeling; even if you think it’s “not a big deal.” Being honest about your health allows your esthetician to make informed decisions that protect your skin and your body.
Good results don’t come from pushing through.
They come from timing, honesty, and health.
New Year Takeaway
Let this year be about listening sooner, resting earlier, and respecting the body you live in. Your skin will always reflect how well you care for the whole system.
